A total of 252 women and girls were subjected to various forms of violence across the country in September, including 49 rape cases, while 52 were killed and 45 others died under mysterious circumstances, according to Bangladesh Mahila Parishad.
The organisation’s Central Legal Aid Sub-Committee compiled the figures based on reports published in 15 national dailies and two online news outlets.
The data were disclosed in a press release signed by Mahila Parishad General Secretary Maleka Banu on Thursday.
Of the 49 rape victims, 30 were girls and 19 were women. Nine people, including two girls, were gang-raped. Four girls were killed after being raped, while another girl died by suicide following rape. Besides, 13 people, including 11 girls, were victims of attempted rape.
In September, 52 women and girls, 39 women and 13 girls, were killed for various reasons. One person also survived an attempted murder.
Meanwhile, 45 people, including 34 women and 11 girls, died under mysterious circumstances.
The month also saw 22 cases of sexual violence, involving 12 girls. Of them, 12 people, including eight girls, were subjected to sexual harassment, while seven, including four girls, faced stalking. Three people were victims of cyber violence.
According to the data, 14 women and girls, including four girls, died by suicide in September. One person was reportedly driven to suicide.
Two people suffered burn injuries, including a girl who died from her injuries.
Eight people faced dowry-related violence, with five killed over dowry demands. Seven people, including one girl, were physically abused in domestic violence incidents, while one domestic worker was subjected to abuse.
Eight people, including seven girls, were abducted during the month. Fourteen people, including three girls, faced physical abuse.
One girl was subjected to child marriage, while attempts were made to arrange child marriages for seven others. In addition, eight people, including one girl, faced various other forms of violence.
