Police arrested two activists of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jubo League in connection with two crude bomb blasts at Kamalapur Railway Station on Saturday.
The arrestees are Mohammad Sakhawat Hossain Raihan, 32, organizational secretary of BCL’s Shahjahanpur thana unit and Mohammad Sanmun, 23, a Jubo Dal activist.
Motijheel Division Deputy Commissioner of DMP Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid disclosed the information at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road on Monday afternoon.
Harun said two crude bombs exploded one after another around 10:37pm on Saturday at a spot between pillars 29 and 30 on platform No 2 of Kamalapur Railway Station.
Following the blasts, relevant railway officials visited the scene, he said.
He claimed that both arrestees admitted during interrogation to their involvement in the blasts
As the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Bangladesh Railway a case was filed with Dhaka Railway Police Station on Sunday, he said.
The two arrestees are being further interrogated to determine whether they were involved in any other cocktail blast incidents while efforts are underway to identify others linked to the incident, Harun said.
He said police are also examining the roles of people including those who might have financed, coordinated, thrown the bombs or recorded videos of the incident.
Asked whether there had been any intelligence failure, the DC said most of the police activities are being conducted based on intelligence, alongside regular operations.
He said actions are being taken regularly on the basis of intelligence to bring those involved under the law.
