The decomposed lower half of the body was found inside a suitcase floating in the water beneath the culvert along the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Sadar upazila.
Police later recovered the woman’s head and other body parts from a jute sack floating nearby.
Locals first spotted the suitcase and alerted police after noticing a human leg protruding from it.
Police then recovered the lower half of the body from inside the suitcase.
Later, they found a jute sack floating in the water near the culvert. A search of the sack revealed the woman’s head and other body parts.
Police suspect the woman was murdered elsewhere and that the perpetrators dismembered her body before putting the remains in the suitcase and sack and dumping them beneath the culvert at night.
Joydebpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Al Mamun confirmed the matter.
He said the victim’s identity and the motive for the killing could not immediately be established. The remains were sent to the morgue of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for autopsy.
“The investigation will determine where and why the woman was killed,” the OC said, adding that efforts were underway to identify the victim and arrest those involved.
