Mohammad Shahed, chairman of Regent Group and Regent Hospital, was arrested again on Monday in the ECB Chattar area in Mirpur, Dhaka, over a case filed with Pallabi Police Station.
Cantonment Police Station arrested Shahed and handed him over to Pallabi Police Station.
Shahin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Cantonment Police Station, said: "There was a warrant against him in a case with Pallabi Police Station. We arrested Shahed and handed him over to them."
Hasan Bashir, OC of Pallabi Police Station, said: "There is a warrant against him in a CR case. Cantonment Police Station arrested him based on our request."
Shahed became widely known in 2020 over a scandal involving fraudulent Covid-19 test certificates issued by Regent Hospital.
On July 6, 2020, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), led by Executive Magistrate Sarwar Alam, raided Regent Hospital's Uttara and Mirpur offices. The raid found evidence that the hospital had issued Covid-19 certificates without conducting tests and had taken money from patients under false pretences.
On July 7, 2020, RAB sealed off Regent Hospital and its main office on the instructions of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
A case was filed the same day against Shahed and 16 others at the Uttara West Police Station.
On July 15, 2020, RAB arrested Shahed in Satkhira as he was allegedly attempting to flee to India. He remained in jail for an extended period in multiple cases.
Shahed was released on bail from Dhaka Central Jail on September 4, 2024. A total of 96 cases were filed against him, of which he was convicted in five. He was released after obtaining bail in all the cases.
