Police have arrested a man in a case filed over attempting to rape a 13-year-old girl in Dhaka's Pallabi area.
The accused, identified as Md Anwar Hossain Sayeed, was arrested after the incident, which occurred on Saturday afternoon.
Pallabi Police Station Inspector (investigation) Emdadul Haque said the accused and the victim's family live in adjacent houses.
"Late in the afternoon, Anwar allegedly dragged the girl into his house by force and attempted to rape her. Hearing her screams, local residents rushed to the spot, rescued the girl and confined the suspect," he said.
Police later arrived at the scene and took Anwar into custody.
The incident sparked protests in the area, with residents surrounding Pallabi Police Station on Saturday afternoon, demanding the death penalty for the accused.
The protesters chanted slogans calling for exemplary punishment and swift legal action.
In a separate demonstration, another group blocked the Mirpur-10 intersection with the same demands, disrupting traffic for a brief period.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Traffic-Mirpur Division) Paritran Talukder said traffic police were deployed immediately to manage the situation.
"The protesters blocked the road for around 10 to 15 minutes. We spoke to them and convinced them to clear the road, after which traffic returned to normal," he added.
