Burglary at lawmaker’s NAM Bhaban flat

Police reported an incident of burglary at the NAM Bhaban residence of an Awami League MP early on Monday, in which valuables worth an as-yet-unknown amount were stolen.

Prof Shah Alam, elected from the Pirojpur-2 constituency, was away from his flat when the incident occurred.

Abdul Momin, officer in charge of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station, said burglars entered the flat, broke open a wooden wardrobe and stole cash, one mobile phone and other valuables including 5-7 tolas of gold ornaments.

The flat bore serial number 603 and was situated in the fifth building of the NAM Bhaban, a government establishment in the capital’s Manik Mia Avenue Manik for the elected members of parliament.

Prof Alam went to visit his home village in Pirojpur on October 10 to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha and returned on Monday to find his flat in a messy condition. A theft case was filed in this regard, Momin said.

Both members of police and the criminal investigation department visited the spot after the break-in. Police suspect the incident might have occurred between Sunday evening and Monday morning.

“NAM building is a secure and well-guarded place. It is impossible to do such a thing (burglary) coming from outside. We think it was committed by people to whom the place was well-known,” Biplob Kumar Sarker, deputy commissioner of police of Tejgaon division, said.
