Death row convict admits crime in jail appeal, seeks forgiveness

Sohel Rana, the main accused in a child rape and murder case in the capital's Pallabi area, has admitted to the crime and sought forgiveness from the High Court in a jail appeal.

In his appeal, the death row convict claimed the incident occurred while he was under the influence of drugs and facing severe financial hardship and family disputes.

He appealed to the court for mercy, citing the future of his only child and the hardship faced by his family.

The information emerged from documents related to the jail appeal on Sunday.

In the appeal, Sohel Rana said he was financially insolvent and worked as a mechanic at an auto-rickshaw garage.

He claimed to have been addicted to yaba and other drugs and said his addiction frequently led to family conflicts.

He further stated that he had no previous involvement in criminal activities and that the incident occurred while he was intoxicated.

"The incident happened unintentionally and subconsciously due to my financial difficulties, family unrest, and drug addiction. I do not understand how it happened," he said in the appeal.

He also pleaded for leniency, saying: "I have no one to support my family or bear the educational expenses of my only son. I made a mistake and seek forgiveness."

Meanwhile, Swapna Akhter, wife of Sohel Rana and a co-accused sentenced to death in the case, has claimed innocence and sought acquittal through her jail appeal.
