Two women were mugged outside their residence in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area shortly after returning to the capital following the Eid-ul-Azha holidays.
According to Mohammadpur police, citing the victims, the assailants threatened the women with a machete and snatched their luggage and other valuables.
The incident took place around 3am on Saturday in the Noorjahan Road area.
A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media. The footage showed the two women standing in front of their residence after getting off a rickshaw, with the rickshaw puller nearby. A man carrying a machete suddenly approaches them, followed by another individual. The two then threaten the women and snatch their luggage, bags, and other belongings.
Mohammadpur Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Rakibuzzaman Rakib said the victims had travelled from Thakurgaon to Dhaka by bus, got off in Shyamoli, and then took a rickshaw to their residence, where they were hijacked.
“We have identified one person involved in the incident and are continuing efforts to arrest him,” he said.
