Case filed over alleged rape of 4-year-old girl in Bakalia of Chittagong

A case has been filed over the alleged rape of a four-year-old girl in Bakalia of Chittagong city on Friday.

The victim’s father lodged the case with Bakalia Police Station on Friday afternoon, naming Md Monir Hossain as the accused.

Police confirmed that the suspect had already been arrested on Thursday night.

Assistant Commissioner (Public Relations) of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police Aminur Rashid told Dhaka Tribune that the case was officially filed by the victim’s father and the legal proceedings are underway.

According to reports, the accused works at a decoration shop in the Chairman Ghat area under Bakalia Police Station.

The incident is said to have taken place on Thursday afternoon in the Chairman Ghat area, triggering widespread outrage among local residents after the news spread.

Enraged locals reportedly identified the suspect’s location and surrounded a building in the area, staging protests that continued into the afternoon. Police later rescued the accused and attempted to transport him to the station, but protesters obstructed the process for an extended period.

As tensions escalated and electricity in the area was reportedly cut off, police later moved the accused to the station in disguise, dressing him in a police uniform.

During the transfer, protesters allegedly set fire to a police vehicle. The situation then turned violent, with clashes between police and locals involving chase and counter chase incidents, stone throwing, and vandalism.

Police responded with tear gas shells, sound grenades, and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd and restore order. At least 30 to 40 people, including police personnel, journalists, and local residents, were injured in the clashes, officials said.
