Case filed over killing of top criminal Titon in New Market

A case has been filed over the shooting death of top-listed criminal Khandakar Naim Ahmed Titon in Dhaka’s New Market area. His elder brother, Said Akhtar Ripon, lodged the case on Wednesday.

New Market Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC)  Mohammad Ayub confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

He said the case names eight–nine unidentified individuals as accused. Titon himself also had multiple cases against him, and an investigation is ongoing.

Earlier, on Tuesday around 7:45pm, miscreants shot Titon dead in front of Shahnewaz Hall of the University of Dhaka, on the western side of New Market. In 2001, he was listed as number two among the government-declared top 23 criminals.

Police suspect that Titon was killed due to internal conflicts among top criminal groups. Previously, on November 10 last year, another listed criminal, Tarik Saif Mamun, was shot dead in broad daylight in front of National Medical College in Old Dhaka. Investigations revealed that Titon’s brother-in-law, Sanjidul Islam Imon, was behind that killing.

According to police, Titon entered the criminal world in the early 1990s. Starting as a member of a local gang, he gradually built his reputation and expanded his activities. He led multiple killings and was also involved in arms trading, establishing a strong weapons network. He faced several murder charges, including the killing of businessman Babar Elahi.

In 2004, law enforcement arrested Titon from Dhaka Cantonment. In 2014, he was sentenced to death in the Babar Elahi murder case. However, he was released on bail in August 2024 from Kashimpur High Security Prison.
