Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested former Jubo Dal leader Moin Uddin Moin, the main accused in an extortion case involving the Centre for Kidney Diseases and Urology (CKD) hospital in Shyamoli, Dhaka.
RAB headquarters confirmed the arrest on Monday. Law enforcement sources said six of his associates were also arrested.
The arrestees are Md Falan Mia, 42, Md Rubel, 42, Md Swapon Kazi, 36, Md Shaon Hossain, 25, Liton Mia and Suman.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Ibn Mizan said Moin was arrested from the Kalia Police Station area in Narail, while Liton and Suman were arrested from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
Meanwhile, a Dhaka court has granted a four-day remand for four aides of Moin in connection with the same case.
Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order on Monday after the investigation officer submitted a remand plea.
Sub-Inspector Md Sabbir Ahmed of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, also the investigation officer, produced the four accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand for proper investigation. The court, however, granted four days.
On Friday, allegations emerged that extortion was being demanded at the CKD hospital using the name of Jubo Dal. It was alleged that when the money was not paid, Moin harassed hospital founder Kamrul Islam, accusing him of being an Awami League supporter.
Following the incident, central Jubo Dal leaders, including its president and general secretary, visited the hospital and said Moin had no organisational affiliation with the party. They assured that those responsible would be brought to justice.
Sources said that since the July mass uprising, Moin had allegedly been attempting to extort money from the hospital through threats.
