Railway staff killed inside vault room

A probe committee was formed and asked to report in three days over the killing of a railway staff at Kamalapur Railway Station on Saturday. Ten security officials were suspended for disregarding the duty.

Deputy inspector general of Bangladesh Railway Police at Kamalapur, Sohrab Hossain, said the decisions were made when Railways Minister Mojibul Haque visited site in the morning.

Four railway policemen and six railway security guards were suspended on the spot.

A three-member panel, led by railways division Joint Secretary Shashi Kumar Singha, has been formed and asked to produce a report within three days.

Earlier on Saturday morning, at around 5am, security found the slaughtered body of Mohammad Ishrafil, 40, inside a temporary ticket counter – set up to handle the resulting pressure of the holidays.

Police said he was sleeping in a room at the station after completing his duties on Friday night. Miscreants attacked him, looted a large sum of money and left Ishrafil gagged and bound in the counter.

Abdul Majid, officer-in-charge of Bangladesh Railway Police at Kamalapur, said over Tk100,000 was missing. “They might have killed him for the money.”

The Criminal Investigation Department and the detective police had rummaged through the crime scene for evidence in the morning.

The body of Mohammad Israfil has been sent to the morgue at Dhaka Medical College.
