Contraband liquors worth Tk6.2m seized in Chittagong

Members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard and police in a joint drive seized 1,656 bottles of various contraband foreign liquors worth Tk6.2m from a fishing boat on Sangu River near Banshkhali upazila’s Khankhanabad in Chittagong early Thursday.

None were arrested in this connection, sources from the police said.

Md Abdus Salam, officer-in-charge of Banshkhali police station, told the Dhaka Tribune that a team from the police station and the Bangladesh Coast Guard conducted the drive in the area at around 12am following a tip-off.

The law enforcement agencies found the liquors from the fishing boat, which was allegedly used for smuggling contraband liquors, being passed as a fishing boat, in the river as well as in the bay, he said.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the smugglers managed to flee, the police official added.

A press-release from the Bangladesh Coast Guard said the seized items were worth Tk6.2m.

A case was lodged with Banshkhali police station in this regard.
