Hizb ut-Tahrir issues life threat to 5 civilians in Jessore

The banned Islamic outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir sent a letter by post to the district commissioner’s office yesterday threatening five prominent cultural and political personalities with death in Jessore. The letter was postmarked and received by Jessore central post office, but did not show where it was posted from. The letter, written in Bangla, contained the name of Hizb ut-Tahrir. On top of the letter are the proclamations “Atheist” and “Gentile.” The letter reads: “Killing atheists and apostates is a way to heaven for Muslims. Your death sentence is final. Execution will be carried out any time and don’t dare to harass militant brothers.” Challenging the administration the letter reads that the organisation is stronger than administration and they have representatives in important areas in Jessore. Then a list of five prominent personalities are listed: Freedom fighter and Jatiya Samajtanrik Dal (JSD) central committee member Rabiul Alam, Trade union centre and a CPB affiliated organisation’s Jessore unit Chief Mahbubur Rahaman Maznu, writer Benjin Khan, Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee leader Ashiquzzaman Tutul and teacher Shraboni Sur. Among them two confirmed that they got the letter. Dr Humayun Kabir, the district commissioner of Jessore, informed that he saw a copy of the letter and talked with responsible officers on the issue. When contacted, Jatiya Samajtanrik Dal (JSD) central committee member Rabiul Alam said: “I informed police and district commissioner about the threat and will file a general diary soon.” Police were notified of the letter. Jessore Police Superintendent Anisur Rahaman told reporters that they already knew about the threat and necessary initiatives will be taken soon in this connection.
