Asif Nazrul: ICT could deliver verdicts in 4 cases against Hasina by October

Several verdicts from the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), including four cases against Hasina, are expected to be delivered by October in cases related to mass killings and enforced disappearances that occurred before and during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul has said.

These cases include charges against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her cabinet members, members of various law enforcement agencies, and leaders and activists of the Awami League, Asif Nazrul said while speaking at a press conference held in the Law Ministry conference room on Tuesday, addressing the progress of these trials.

He said: “Many are eager to know about the progress of the July mass killing trials. A common concern is the perceived lack of visible progress in cases related to the July massacre at the International Criminal Tribunal.

"We acknowledge such concerns with due respect and assure that significant advancements have been made in the tribunal proceedings since the amendment of the International Tribunal Act and the formation of the ICT.”

Asif Nazrul said the tribunal became fully operational four months ago.

“More than 300 complaints have been filed with the tribunal, out of which our prosecution team has formally lodged 16 cases after thorough scrutiny. Among these, investigations for four cases are expected to be completed within this month," he said.

"Subsequently, the formal trial proceedings will commence with the framing of charges,” he added.

The adviser explained that as per legal provisions, defence attorneys are granted three weeks to prepare once the trial begins.

"Following this preparatory period, witness testimonies will commence in full swing. This process is expected to begin in April, right after Eid,” he said.

Asif Nazrul also mentioned that since the ICT conducts continuous hearings, verdicts in all cases should be delivered within four to six months of the commencement of proceedings

“Accordingly, we anticipate that three to four verdicts will be delivered by October. These cases involve high-ranking leaders of the Awami League, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, as well as senior police and administrative officials.”

Additionally, the law adviser revealed that a report from the United Nations investigative team is expected within the next couple of days.

He indicated that he would not make any official statements regarding the report at that moment.

However, he expressed confidence that the findings would help enhance the credibility, transparency and efficiency of the investigation and judicial processes.
