Court orders seizure of 368C worth of assets belonging to S Alam, family

A Dhaka court has ordered the seizure of over 58 acres of land worth Tk368.25 crore owned by Saiful Alam (S Alam), chairman of S Alam Group, along with his family and business entities.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib issued the order on Thursday following a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), according to court sources.

On behalf of the ACC, Deputy Director Abu Sayeed filed the petition seeking confiscation of the assets.

The seized assets include 0.1637 acres of land in ward no 18 of Chittagong, valued at Tk1.37 crore, and another plot of 0.1350 acres in the same ward, worth Tk1.35 crore.

Additionally, 8.50 decimals of land in Patharghata union, owned by S Alam Refined Sugar Industries Limited’s Managing Director Mohammad Saiful Alam, has been seized, with a market value of Tk3.54 crore.

The order also includes 0.90 acres of land in the same union, valued at Tk37.48 lakh, and another 1.20-acre plot worth Tk60 lakh.

Among the confiscated lands of S Alam Cold Steel Limited are—0.06 acres in Patiya Upazila, valued at Tk30,000; a plot in Patiya’s Shikalbaha union measuring one kani, two kora, one kontho, and ten til, valued at Tk21 lakh; another 0.28-acre plot in the same area, worth Tk14 lakh; 0.4150 acres, valued at Tk21 lakh; 0.26 acres, worth Tk13 lakh; 0.32 acres, valued at Tk16 lakh; 0.80 acres, worth Tk31.50 lakh; 0.14 acres, worth Tk80,000; 0.6 acres, worth Tk 30,000; 0.1850 acres, worth Tk9.50 lakh; 0.06 acres, worth Tk3 lakh; 0.15 acres, worth Tk7.50 lakh; 0.5750 acres, valued at Tk29.50 lakh; 0.12 acres, worth Tk60,000; and 0.05 acres, worth Tk12,000.

In Narayanganj, 1.3850 acres of land belonging to Savola Oil Limited, along with a 2,000-square-foot semi-pucca house valued at Tk12.17 crore, have been seized.

Additionally, 2 acres of land, worth Tk7.70 crore; 0.3636 acres, valued at Tk1.21 crore; 0.3469 acres, worth Tk1.15 crore; 1.8243 acres, valued at Tk6.08 crore; 3.8264 acres, worth Tk12.75 crore; and 2.1889 acres, valued at Tk7.29 crore, have also been confiscated.

Delta Oil Refinery Limited’s 1.2150 acres and a 1,500-square-foot pucca house, valued at Tk7.29 crore, have been seized.

Additionally, 0.17 acres and a 500-square-foot semi-pucca house, worth Tk1.54 crore; 0.3650 acres, valued at Tk73 lakh; and 1.6350 acres, worth Tk6.29 crore, have been confiscated.

For Sunman Textile Mills Limited, under Major (Retd) Abdul Mannan, the confiscated assets include—1.89 acres in Keshabpur, Sitakunda, valued at Tk2.84 lakh, and 1.46 acres, worth Tk2.37 lakh.

For S Alam Cold Rolled Steels Limited, Managing Director Osman Gani’s 9.43 acres in Shikalbaha, under Karnaphuli Police Station in Chittagong, have been seized, with a total value of Tk 153.68 crore. Another 9.43 acres in the same area, valued at Tk 82.06 crore, have also been confiscated.

Saiful Alam personally owns 4.707 acres of land in Shikalbaha, Karnaphuli under 23 deeds, valued at Tk5 lakh.

A 10-katha (16.50-decimal) plot in Gulshan-2, previously owned by the son of former President Hussain Muhammad Ershad, worth Tk2.50 crore, has been seized.

Additionally, 90.88 decimals of land and a 3,000-square-foot, one-storey building in Tejgaon, Dhaka, under Inherent Trading & Implex Limited, managed by Ansarul Islam, with a total value of Tk56.96 crore, have been confiscated.

A one-bigha (33-decimal) plot in the Dhanmondi Residential Area, under Blind Limited, managed by Ahsanul Alam, has also been seized.

In total, 58.1646 acres of land worth Tk368.25 crore have been confiscated.

According to the petition, during an ongoing investigation into allegations of laundering $1 billion to Singapore, the British Virgin Islands, Cyprus, and other countries, information about these properties was discovered.

The petition argued that if these assets were not seized, there was a risk of them being transferred elsewhere.
