The police have arrested a mugger in connection with the murder of Md Wazed Shimanta, a student of American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), in the DIT area of Narayanganj city.
The arrested individual, Anik, is the son of Noyon from Sukumpotti in the city.
According to the police, Anik has at least eight prior cases against him for mugging, robbery, and drug-related offenses.
During a press conference held at the District Police Superintendent's office this Wednesday, Superintendent of Police (SP) Pratyush Kumar Majumdar shared these details with journalists.
The SP added that Shimanta’s mobile phone and a switchblade used in the murder were recovered from Anik.
The police stated that on Thursday morning, Shimanta, a Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) student at AIUB, left his Deobhog residence for the university. Around 6am, he was attacked by miscreants in front of the Ali Ahmad Chunka Library near his home.
The attackers stabbed him, snatched a mobile phone, and looted Tk1,800 before fleeing.
Critically injured, Shimanta was first taken to the Narayanganj 100-bed General Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). He succumbed to his injuries on Saturday night while undergoing treatment at DMCH.
Shimanta’s father, Haji Alam Chan, filed a case against unidentified individuals at Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station on Sunday.
Anik has been shown arrested in connection with the case and sent to court, according to police. SP Pratyush Kumar Majumdar stated that efforts are underway to arrest others involved in the incident.
Meanwhile, residents of the area and Shimanta’s relatives staged a protest in the city in the morning, demanding the arrest of those involved in the murder and enhanced security in Narayanganj.
