Police arrested six persons Monday in connection with the case of Dhubaura upazila chairman killing in Mymensingh.
The arrestees Morad Hossain, Milon, Idris Ali, Abdul Jalil, Emran Hossain and Al Amin were produced before a Mymensingh Court while the court sent them to jail.
Police said all of them were the local Awami League activists and supporters of a faction of the party.
Forkan Uddin Mridha alias Pahari Selim, 40, chairman of Dhubaura upazila, who was also the secretary of the upazila’s Awami League, was killed, while 10 others were injured in an intra-party clash on Sunday evening.
The clash started following a programme organised to mark the upgrading of the 30-bed Dhubaura Upazila Health Complex to a 50-bed hospital.
After the programme the Secretary of Gamaritala union Awami League Azizul Haque Khan tried to enter the venue at Panchanandapur, where VIP guests were having lunch around 2pm, but Selim and his cohorts denied him to give the access. Then an argument started.
Later, police imposed section 144 to avoid any untoward incident.
But in the afternoon, defying the section 144, supporters of Selim and Azizul Haque locked into a clash at Panchanandapur, where they hit each other with lethal weapons.
Including the Chairman Selim, at least 11 people were injured in the clash.
Of the injured, seven were admitted at Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital where the chairman died in the evening.
Section 144 has been enforced in the area since the incident, and it would be continued until further notification, said Abdul Haque, officer-in-charge of Dhubaura police station.
The OC added that additional police and BGB members have been deployed in the area to avert any further incident.
