Concerned authorities have yet to take any actions against four accused, including former vice-chancellor of Khulna University Saifuddin Shah, in connection with the forgery of a piece of university-owned land even after 10 months of the probe report being issued regarding the matter.
Earlier, a five-member inquiry committee, headed by former VC of Noakhali University of Science and Technology Professor Sanjoy Kumar Adhikari, was formed on June 19, 2012 to investigate land scam. The committee recorded statements of 27 people, including the VC and the pro-VC. The entire land was also measured by the surveyor of the deputy commissioner's office.
Investigation found that Saifuddin and his three other associates had sold about 0.8 hectares of university land to 15 people in the form of plots by showing forged documents.
The inquiry committee submitted its report accusing Saifuddin, Director for Planning and Development Zahirul Haque, Deputy Registrar Ali Akbar and his wife Momtaz Jaman Champa, headmistress of a school on the university campus.
Teachers, officials and employees of KU later raised a movement to remove the accused four from their posts and punish them. Civil society members of Khulna also expressed their solidarity with the demands.
Faced with public pressure, VC Saifuddin Shah resigned on October 15 last year. Following his resignation, Pro VC Prof Fayek-Uz-Zaman took charge as VC on January 10 this year and assured of ensuring an exemplary punishment for those involved in the land scandal.
Former dean and Head of the physics department Professor Harun-Ur-Rashid Khan said the authorities were dilly dallying with the incident, adding that it seemed the authorities were trying to protect the accused.
KU Teachers Association's former president Prof Rezaul Karim said: "The land scandal is an arranged game between the former and incumbent VCs."
He demanded immediate actions be taken against those found guilty by the inquiry committee.
