8L looted from Ganabhaban recovered

RAB and army members have recovered Tk8 lakh, which was looted from Ganabhaban after Sheikh Hasina’s step down in the face of the mass uprising on August 5.

The money was recovered from the Rayerbazar Bot Tala area in Dhaka on Monday night. 

Later, they were taken to the SPBN army camp in Bosila.

Seeking anonymity, a military officer said: “Some five to six individuals had brought a chest from Ganabhaban. Afterwards, one of them took some money and went to his village home.

“The remaining money stayed with one individual. When a dispute over the division of the money arose, one of them called the military and provided information about the money. Later, the money was recovered from a house in Rayer Bazar."

Captain Sadi, who was in charge of the patrol team in Mohammadpur, said: "We received the information and recovered Tk8 lakh at the scene. Efforts are ongoing to recover the remaining money, and no one has been detained in this incident."

On August 5, following the mass uprising of students and citizens, Sheikh Hasina left the country. Immediately, the agitated public attacked and looted the prime minister's official residence, Ganabhaban.

That day, thousands of people looted money, furniture, saris, jewellery, and even ducks and chickens from Ganabhaban.

Among the looted items from Ganabhaban, a few individuals from the Mohammadpur, Rayer Bazar area brought a chest containing Tk16 lakh.
