Police arrested a doctor and his wife on Saturday afternoon for allegedly torturing a 10-year-old domestic help on multiple occasions on suspicion of theft in Savar.
The arrestees are Kazi Md Ismail Hossain, 31, residential medical officer at Barguna Sadar Hospital, and his wife Mahmuda Khatun Parashmani, 26.
Savar Model police station Inspector (operation) Nayan Karkun confirmed the matter.
The OC said: “The child was tortured according to the doctor's description. There were signs of torture all over her body. They were arrested from their residence on Saturday afternoon on charges of torture. The victim was admitted to Savar Upazila Health Complex.”
The two were arrested after the victim's mother, garment worker Kulsum Begum, filed a case with police earlier in the day.
The child said: "I was working at that house for about a year. In the beginning, they [Ismail and Parashmani] loved me. But, after some days they started beating me after accusing me of stealing."
Dr Sayemul Huda, Savar upazila health and family planning officer, said: “We suspect the child was tortured with a knife and heavy objects."
