Disciplinary action has been taken against eight people in connection with the escape of four death row convicts by drilling the roof of a condemned cell in Bogra District Jail.
Five officials, including Deputy Jailer Md Hossainuzzaman and Farid Uddin, chief prison officer, were suspended.
Departmental cases were filed against three others.
The separate committees formed by the District Administrator and the Department of Prisons conducted investigations on Friday.
A responsible prison official gave this information on condition of anonymity.
The convicts are also being transferred to other jails in the country, including Rajshahi.
The convicts are Nazrul Islam Majnu of the Diadanga area in Bhurungamari upazila, Kurigram; Amir Hossain of Fazarkandi village in Madhabdi upazila, Narsingdi; Zakaria, son of Abdul Mannan, mayor of Kahaloo municipality, Bogra; and Farid Sheikh of Kuturbari Paschimpara, Bogra.
The prison officer also said that there are two condemned cells: one in Jaflong with four rooms and another in Atrai with five rooms, housing ten death row inmates. Following an escape from Jaflong, four recaptured inmates were shackled and moved to another cell, with heightened surveillance on them and others. Security has been enhanced throughout the jail.
On early Wednesday, the four convicts breached the cell's roof, fashioned a rope from bed sheets, and climbed onto it. They descended the high wall and crossed the Karatoa River bridge using the rope.
The escape occurred at 3:55am on Wednesday from one of the three condemned cells in the east-north corner of the prison, which houses 13 death row inmates.
The group was arrested around 4:30am while preparing to flee from Chelopara Bridge, based on a tip-off received by local police. Later, they were taken to the DB office after primary interrogation.
Concerns have been raised about how the convicts managed to escape from the prison, especially as they were not wearing prison clothes. Many attribute the incident to negligence by jail officials and demand a thorough investigation and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
This incident also highlights the jail's poor infrastructure and the authorities' negligence. There are allegations of various irregularities, including keeping wealthy inmates in the jail hospital under the pretext of illness and supplying outside food and drugs.
On October 19, the body of a guard named Ekramul Haq was discovered within the Bogra Jail compound.
In 2017, the prime suspect in a case involving the rape of a female student and shaving her head, labour leader Tufan Sarkar, was accused of consuming Phensedyl through saline tubes in the visitor's room. His associates threw Phensedyl bottles into the jail from the south side, which the warders collected and delivered to Tufan.
Following media reports, Tufan was transferred from Bogra to Kashimpur Jail.
Additionally, in August, allegations arose against the former jail superintendent for facilitating a meeting between the rape victim and Tufan Sarkar in jail. There are also complaints about influential inmates receiving bottles of alcohol and drugs hidden in food.
