A case has been filed with a Chittagong court regarding the death of a former Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) officer in police custody.
Four police officers, including the officer-in-charge (OC) of Chandgaon police station, and five others have been implicated in the case.
Fauzia Anwar, the deceased officer's wife, filed the case on Monday in the court of Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Begum Jebunnessa, said Court Bench Assistant Monir Hossain.
"The case was accepted, and the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has been directed to investigate," he added.
The accused include Chandgaon police station OC Khairul Islam, Inspector Manibur Rahman, Assistant Sub-Inspectors Md Yusuf and Sohail Rana, SM Asaduzzaman, Jasim Uddin, Md Liton, Rani Akhtar Tania, and Koli Akhtar.
Sayed Mohammad Shahidullah, the retired ACC deputy director, was arrested on October 3 night near Chandgaon police station based on a warrant.
Police said that Rani Akhtar Tania had filed a case against Shahidullah and eight others for threats and defamation on August 29.
After his arrest, Shahidullah felt unwell at the station.
Shahidullah's younger brother, who was present at the time, gave him an inhaler when he showed signs of a heart attack.
Despite this, Shahidullah's condition worsened quickly. At the younger brother's urging, police rushed Shahidullah to Parkview Hospital, where a doctor declared him dead.
A committee was formed to investigate the matter, comprising a deputy police commissioner of the CMP north zone, as well as an additional deputy commissioner and assistant commissioner of the special branch of CMP.
Initially, the committee was given a three-working-day deadline to submit its inquiry report. However, they missed the deadline and requested a three-day extension.
The committee later requested an additional ten days, stating they needed more time to complete the investigation.
In response to inquiries, Deputy Police Commissioner of Detective Branch (North) Nihad Adnan Taian said: “We have requested an additional 10 days to investigate the death of the former ACC officer in police custody. We aim to submit the report within the next seven days.”
"The report will be submitted after a comprehensive and unbiased investigation," he added.
After the incident, two ASIs from the Chandgaon police station, Md Yusuf and Sohail Rana, who participated in the arrest operation, were relieved from their duties and transferred to the police line in Chittagong.
Furthermore, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Chittagong established a single-member committee to probe the issuance of an arrest warrant without disclosing the court summons in the case initiated by Rani Akhtar Tania.
Harun Ur Rashid, the accused bench assistant at Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate-6 Court, was reassigned from his judicial responsibilities to the position of “Cashier”.
