Milky Murder Case:Dhaka court rejects bail of accused

A Dhaka court wednesday refused bail to Md Shahidul Islam and placed him on four days’ police remand in connection with the killing of Jubo League leader Riazul Haque Khan Milky, who was shot dead in the capital last month.

Metropolitan Magistrate Tanbir Ahmed gave the order after a hearing on a police plea for a week’s remand. He also rejected Shahidul’s bail prayer at the same time.

Assistant Superintendent of Police, Kazemur Rashid of Rab-1, the investigating officer of the case, had prayed for seven days’ remand, saying he needed the time to interrogate the suspect.

Shahidul was arrest by Rab from Kamalapur rail station wednesday, according to court papers. He is reportedly a close associate of Shakhawat Hossain Chanchal, organising secretary of Juba League’s Dhaka city (north) unit, who is also an accused in the killing.

Milky, 43, organising secretary of Dhaka city (south) unit of Jubo League, the ruling party’s youth wing, was gunned down on the street in the capital’s Gulshan area in the early hours of July 30.

Later that same day, Milky’s brother, Maj Rashidul Haque Khan, filed a murder case with Gulshan police station accusing 11 people, including Chanchal and Zahid Siddiki Tarek. Nine of the accused have been arrested to date.

Tarek, meanwhile, was killed in “crossfire” during a gunfight between Rab and unidentified gunmen on July 31 in the city’s Khilkhet area. One of the alleged assailants, Shah Alam, was also killed in the shootout.
