Chittagong businessman robbed of Tk.33m One held

A gang of muggers in the guise of Rab personnel robbed Tk3,30,000 from a businessman at Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Sitakunda upazila in Chittagong on Tuesday.

The victim was Ali Akbar, 45, hailing from Jor Amtol area. Police rescued the businessman by chasing the muggers. The lawmen also nabbed a member of the gang, Habibur Rahman, while four others managed to flee.

Quoting the victim, Samiul Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sitakunda police station, told the Dhaka Tribune that Akbar was carrying the money from his residence to his workplace by a CNG-run auto-rickshaw around 11:30am.

When the CNG reached the highway in Kadamrasul area, a microbus chased the CNG and asked it to stop, he said.

Later, four men in civil dress told Akbar they were from Rab and forced him to get into the vehicle, saying they have complaints against him. They tied Akbar’s hands and legs and took away his money after taking him into their microbus.1 Seeing this, locals in the area started shouting and a patrol team of Sitakunda police station chased the gang.

Sensing police presence, the muggers left the victim and fled with the money, said the OC. Later, police nabbed the microbus driver.
