Smuggled gold, electronics seized in airport, one held

Armed Police Battalion (APBn) members seized 500g of gold, and electronic accessories worth about Tk5m after the items were smuggled into the country from Singapore through the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Friday night.

The APBn personnel also arrested Md Mizanur Rahman Ripon, 32, in this connection, said APBn Senior Assistant Superintendent Alamgir Hossain Shimul.

The seized electronic accessories including nine laptops and over 100 cameras and mobile phone sets.

The police official said Ripon was arrested when he was crossing Canopy-2 of the airport with the smuggled items without having paid duty.

“Ripon has claimed that one Sujon, aged about 45, arrived from Singapore by a flight of Singapore Airlines that arrived Dhaka at 11:45pm Friday, had handed him the items to take those out of the airport,” added Alamgir.

The detainee also admitted that he had successfully taken smuggled items out of the airport in the past.

Police suspect that the officials concerned might have been involved in the attempt.

The detainee was handed over to Airport Police Station.
