“Boomerang” is commonly used verbally as a symbolic word, although its application as a weapon is a rare one. But the symbolic word got a realistic shape when a policeman was hit by a bullet that he had fired at a gang of muggers early yesterday.
The boomerang is a type of metal weapon, which was used long ago in fighting or attacking targets.
Unless the user has expertise in its use, it might have caused harm to the user as it returned to the place from where it was thrown.
Injured police constable Mahbub Alam, 35, of Ramna Police Station was first admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) with a bullet injury at his hand. Later, he was admitted to Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital.
“Mahbub and some other policemen had been chasing a gang of muggers that was fleeing after committing a mugging incident by a car, at Sabjibagan in the capital’s Ramna area at around 2:30am.
He fired a gunshot at the muggers’ car, but the bullet hit the glass of the car and was reflected back to him, resulting in an unlikely injury to his hand,” said Mashiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Ramna police station.
The OC said although the constable suffered a bullet wound, other members of the team made their chase successful and arrested three members of the gang with their car.
“A cell phone, a vanity bag, two machetes and Tk3000 were recovered from their possession,” the OC said, and added that the recovered items were snatched from pedestrians.
