The wife of a college teacher was stabbed to death by a robber at her residence in Janoki Sing Road under Kawnia police station in the city in the early hours of Friday.
The victim was identified as Dil Afroz, 40, mother of two schoolgirls of class ten and six, and wife of Mahmud Al Jalal, geography teacher at Amrita Lal Dey College in the city.
Mahbubur Rahman, Kawnia police station in-charge, said, following a primary investigation it was known that the robber entered the dining room of the victim’s residence after cutting open one of its grills at around 2am.
Jalal, Dil Afroz and her daughters were sleeping in three separate rooms and the robber locked Jalal’s room from the outside.
Dil Afroz, after becoming aware of the robber’s presence, cried out for help and clasped him. The robber stabbed Dil Afroz and succeeded in fleeing the scene with two mobile phone sets and Tk2,500.
The daughters rushed from their rooms to free their father and brought Dil Afroz to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, where she was declared dead by the attending physician, police sources said.
Police recovered the dead body and sent it to SBMCH morgue for autopsy.
Police officials said: “The killing could be done by one of the drug addicts from the same area, as a call was placed from one of the robbed mobile phones asking the victim’s father to go to his daughter’s (Dil Afroz) house, as she is severely sick.”
