Death threat to PM: Buet teacher gets 7-year jail

A Dhaka court on Thursday afternoon sentenced a teacher of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) to seven years in prison for giving a death threat to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Facebook.

The convict -- Hafizur Rahman Rana -- is a lecturer of mechanical engineering.

Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Zahirul Haque pronounced the verdict in the absence of Hafizur.

Hafizur is on the run after securing bail from the High Court in connection with the case on August 14, 2012. Later, he was granted bail from the CMM court on September 18, 2012.

On April 23, 2012, president of Jononetri Parishad AB Siddique filed a general diary (GD) with Shahbagh police station against Hafizur.

According to Siddique's statement, the teacher had made a post on Facebook saying he would kill the prime minister.

The national-level Bangla daily Bhorer Kagoj published the news on April19, 2012 while the Janakhantha published it on April 23.

According to the newspapers, Hafizur said on Facebook: “Hey Hyena, you have destroyed the country, now you are trying to destroy our Buet… We the general students are the hunters. We will shoot in your head…and hang your head at the gate of Buet to avoid further aggression of hyenas.”

On June 18, 2012, investigation officer SI Eantaj Ali submitted his report in this regard. On September 20, in the same year, the metropolitan sessions judge framed charge against the accused.
