College girl among six held with yaba pills

Detective Branch of Police have arrested six people including a college girl and recovered 30,000 yaba pills from their possession early Friday.

The arrestees are: Manila Chowdhury, 22, Mohammad Taher, 48, Kulsum, 32, Jan-e-Alam, 45, Mohammad Khaled, 30, and Mohammad Asif, 24.

Manila is a third-year student of Finance Department of Titumir College.

Mashiur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of DB said acting on a tip-off, a team of intelligence department raided the Nazimuddin road area in Old Dhaka and arrested Jan-e-Alam and Asif around 4:30pm.

During interrogation, they confessed being involved in yaba trade, and 5,000 club drugs were recovered from Jan-e-Alam and 4,000 from Asif, he said.

Extracting information from the duo, the DB team raided Rampura Banasree area around 7:30pm and arrested Kulsum with 4,000 yaba pills in her possession.

Following that, the DB team raided the Kamalapur area at 11pm and arrested Manila – the college girl – Abu Taher and Khaled, , ADC Mashiur said.

“We recovered 9,000 yaba pills from Manila’s college bag, 5,000 pills from Taher and 3,000 from Khaled’s possessions,” Mashiur said.

About Manila, ADC Mashiur said the college girl had served jail terms earlier too in a drug case and she established a syndicate of drug smugglers while in jail.

“We also suspect that she was involved in a bank robbery in 2007,” he said, adding that her father too was involved in drug smuggling.

According to DB, the arrestees were involved with drug syndicate for many days and cases were filed against Manila, Taher and Khaled with Motijheel police station, against Kulsum with Rampura police station and against Jan-e-Alam and Asif with the Chawkbazar police station.

About the drug supply and syndicate, Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of DB police told the Dhaka Tribune they have information that employees, some teachers and students of private universities are involved with this drug syndicate.

Meanwhile, a Dhaka court placed the arrestees on a three-day remand after DB produced them before the court.

Metropolitan Magistrate Islam Hossain passed the order after police sought remand for them for interrogation.
