Six suspected pirates lynched in Noakhali

Six members of a pirate gang, including the ringleader, were killed and another was injured in a lynch-mob attack in Subarnachar upazila early Friday, reported UNB.

One of the deceased was identified as Mohammad Selim, 40, the lynchpin of “Selim Bahini” and a resident of Char Majid area.

Police said locals chased a gang of 15-20 pirates when they took position on the south side of Char Majid Primary School for robbery.

They managed to catch seven of the hoodlums. The angered locals retaliated, leaving three dead on the spot and four others injured.

On information, police recovered the bodies and rescued the injured pirates. The injured were rushed to Subarnachar Upazila Health Complex where three of them died.

The bodies were sent to the Noakhali Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, sources said.

Police also recovered 200 season cards (tokens for collecting tolls from fishermen), two shot guns, one LG, 18 bullets, four cartridges and six sharp weapons from the spot.

Noakhali police super Anisur Rahman confirmed the deaths of six pirates in the mass beating.

Assistant police super Niskriti Chakma said the pirate gang had long been involved in committing robberies in the Meghna and Bamni rivers.

Officer-in-Charge of Char Jabbar Police Station Mosharraf Hossain Tarafder said Selim was accused in various cases, including murder, filed in different police stations. Fortunately for the locals, they breathe a sigh of relief following the death of the ringleader of the gang.
