Siblings get life-term for throwing acid at cousins in Chittagong

A Chittagong court on Wednesday sentenced two siblings to life imprisonment for throwing acid on their two cousins in 2010.

The convicts are Sharmin Farzana Latif, 33, and her brother Muhammad Iftekhar Latif, 30.

Chittagong Metropolitan Additional Sessions Judge Nargis Akhter delivered the verdict, state's counsel Advocate Taslim Uddin confirmed.

He said that, in addition, Iftekhar was fined Tk50,000 while Sharmin was fined Tk30,000. For non-payment, she was sentenced to seven more years in prison.

Earlier, on October 10, 2010, the convicts threw acid on Muntaha Karina and Salsabil Tasnim at their residence in Chawkbazar's Joynagar area. 

The bodies of the sisters were burnt with acid.

Later, their father Anwarul Mubin filed a case with the Panchlaish police against the accused.

Following the investigation, the police filed a charge sheet against the victim's cousin Iftekhar and his sister Sharmin on December 14.

After hearing the charge sheet filed by the police, the court was formed on April 28, 2011, by then Metropolitan Sessions judge AKM Shamsul Islam. 

On May 4 and 5 of that year, the trial began with testimony.
