New Market mayhem: Murder case filed over Mursalin’s death

A murder case has been filed over the death of clothing shop worker Md Mursalin, who was injured during the violent clashes between Dhaka College students and traders of New Market on Tuesday.

The deceased’s brother, Nur Mohammad, filed the case on Thursday night against 100-150 unidentified people with the New Market police station, Officer-in-Charge MA Kaiyum confirmed the matter to Bangla Tribune.

Mursalin, who had been on life support, passed away at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) at 4.35am on Thursday.

According to doctors, Mursalin bled to death due to his injuries.

On Tuesday night, Nahid Hossain, 20, delivery person of a computer shop, died during treatment at DMCH. He was also fatally injured during the clashes in the New Market area.

The condition of at least three others including two students is stated to be critical.

With this, four cases have been filed over the violent clashes.

At least 1400 people were sued in the three other cases filed over the clashes and casualties where 24 persons were named.

Sub-Inspector Mehedi Hasan and Inspector Yamin Kabir of New Market police station filed two of the cases. The other is a murder case, filed by the uncle of Nahid.

CCTV footage showed that the clashes ensued following an altercation at an eatery in the New Market on Monday night.

The sporadic fights throughout the next day left more than 50 people including bystanders and journalists injured.
