Sinha murder verdict at High Court for death reference hearing

Copies of the verdict and case documents of the murder of retired Bangladesh Army Major Sinha Md Rashed Khan in Cox’s Bazar have been received by the High Court.

Supreme Court’s Special Officer Md Saifur Rahman said that the High Court’s death reference wing received the documents on Tuesday.

Death sentences issued by trial courts are forwarded as death references to the High Court for approval.

Appeals against such verdicts have to be filed with the High Court within a week of the ruling.

On January 31, a Cox’s Bazar court has sentenced two former police officers—Pradip Kumar Das, former Teknaf police OC, and Liakat Ali -- to death for the killing of the army officer.

On the night of July 31, 2020, Sinha was killed by police fire at a checkpost in Cox’s Bazar’s Marine Drive.

The 36-year old was a member of the Special Security Force tasked with guarding the prime minister. He had gone into early retirement to pursue his personal interests.

He was filming a travel documentary in Cox's Bazar along with three others.

After the incident, the lid was blown on misdeeds commited by Pradip, which involved framing gunfights in the name of drug busts near the Myanmar border in Teknaf.

He had similarly tried to cover up the killing of Sinha as a 'gunfight'.

Sinha's sister Sharmin Shahria Ferdous later started a murder case against nine policemen, including Pradip and Liakat.

Fifteen people were indicted in the case.

Six others, including three police sources, have been sentenced to life in prison over their involvement in the murder and attempts to cover up the incident.

Four policemen and three Armed Police Battalion members were acquitted as the charges against them could not be proved beyond a reasonable doubt.
