Case filed over police-AL men clash in Natore

A case has been lodged against 267 Awami League men, including Gurudaspur upazila Awami League Secretary and Municipality Mayor Shah Newaz, over a clash between the ruling party men and law enforcers on Thursday. Gurudaspur police station Sub-Inspector Saiduzzaman filed the case against 67 named and 200 unidentified individuals on Thursday night. Police have so far arrested Aminul Islam Rois, 22, son of Abdus Samad of Khamar Nachkoir Khowarpara, and Monirul Islam Mithu, 22, son of Zan Mohammad Sheikh of Chanchkoir Bazar. The duo were produced before a court on Friday. Police said they were working to identify and arrest the other accused from video footage of the clash. On Thursday, a monthly co-ordination was arranged at the upazila hall room. Around 9am, Mayor Shah Newaz arrived along with 200 of his supporters. When the group attempted to enter the venue, they were blocked by the police. A fight ensued wherein the mayor’s men attacked the law enforcers and attempted to snatch their weapons. In retaliation, police fired bullets and charged batons on them. Five policemen, including SI Tarikul Islam and SI Saifuzzaman, and more than five Awami League men were also injured.
