A woman lost her one of her legs when a bus went out of control and ploughed through a footpath in the Bangla Motor area of Dhaka.
The incident took place in the Bangla Motor area under Hatirjheel police station, around 2pm on Tuesday.
The woman was identified as Krishna Roy, 50, a staff of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).
“A bus from Trust Paribahan came from Karwan Bazar and was heading towards Shahbagh around 2pm. Suddenly, the bus lost control and ran over the footpath where Krishna was standing,” said Hatirjheel police station Sub-Inspector Kayrul Alam, confirming the incident.
The bus hit her and seriously injured her left leg. She was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and was later transferred to Pangu Hospital for better treatment, he added.
Quoting witnesses, SI Kayrul said Krishna’s leg broke from under the knee.
Hatirjheel police station OC Abdur Rashid said the bus responsible has been seized but the driver and conductor fled the scene of the incident.
“We are trying to catch them,” he added.
BIWTC Public Relations Officer Nazrul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune that following the accident, Krishna’s leg had to be amputated and she received injuries in different parts of her body.
“She is now under treatment. We are trying to provide her with all kinds of support. We can say further details after her treatment is completed, he added.
