A suspected robber has been killed in a gunfight with detectives in Kushtia’s Mirpur upazila, police say.
The deceased is Rafiqul Islam Rafiq, son of one Aziz Sheikh of Rajbari district. He was accused in several cases of robbery and mugging.
The gun battle took place early Wednesday near Kaligara bridge area on Kushtia-Meherpur road.
Dhaka Tribune could not independently verify the police's claim.
Police recovered arms and ammunition, and sharp weapons from the spot"Acting on a tip-off, a team of district Detective Branch of police raided the area where robbers were preparing to rob putting wooden logs on road," Kushtia DB Officer-in-Charge Sabirul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune.
"Sensing police presence, the robbers opened fire. In retaliation, police fired back, leaving Rafiq injured. However, his cohorts managed to flee the scene.
"Rafiq was declared dead by the doctors at Mirpur Upazila Health Complex," the OC added.
Police had recovered arms, ammunition and locally-made sharp weapons from the spot, he claimed.
