Moulvibazar woman promised job in Saudi Arabia, raped instead

A housewife from Kulaura upazila in Moulvibazar was allegedly lured to Saudi Arabia with the promise of a lucrative job but was instead brutally assaulted and sexually abused by a Bangladeshi expat. The housewife, who returned from Saudi Arabia in February, filed a written complaint with Kulaura police station on March 8, accusing Shahjahan Mia, a Bangladeshi expatriate in Saudi Arabia. According to the complaint, a few months ago 40-year-old Shahjahan Mia, who was acquainted with the victim, called her from Saudi Arabia and offered her a job as a domestic worker for a salary of Tk20,000. He then took Tk50,000 from her to get her paperwork done. His relatives helped with the process.

The victim flew to Saudi Arabia on November 15 last year and Shahjahan picked her up from the airport and took her to his home. On her very first day there, Shahjahan and several other men raped her. This began to occur on a daily basis. When her physical condition deteriorated to a serious extent, Shahjahan packed all her belongings and sent her back to Bangladesh on February 11. When contacted over the phone, Shahjahan told the Dhaka Tribune that he had driven the victim directly from the airport to her workplace, the residence of a Saudi man. “Everything she said is false,” Shahjahan claimed. Kulaura police station OC Shamuddoha said that they had contacted Shahjahan over the phone to investigate the matter. “Shahjahan said he would send us some evidence that the woman was employed at the residence of a Saudi man.” “Legal actions will be taken as soon as the investigation ends,” the OC added.
