A woman has been arrested in Gazipur for murdering her husband and then dumping his body by cutting it into six pieces.
The victim has been identified as Rafiqul Islam, 28.
His wife, Jibonnahar, 25, was arrested on Friday after Rafiqul’s dismembered body was recovered in Sreepur upazila’s Gargaria Masterbari area.
She confessed to police to killing her husband during preliminary interrogation, Gazipur’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Shamsunnahar told a press briefing at her office on Saturday afternoon.
The murder took place at the couple’s rented home in Gargaria Masterbari area on Thursday night, said the SP.
SP Shamsunnahar said that a continuous marital dispute and heated argument between the couple over their salaries had led to the gruesome murder.
Rafiqul worked as a store loader in a local readymade garment factory named How Are You; and Jibonnahar worked as a sewing operator in Meghna Knit Composite Ltd factory.
She receives a salary higher than her husband’s. Rafiqul reportedly has been demanding a bigger share from her salary which Jibonnahar did not agree to — leading to their altercations.
On Thursday night, during an argument over the issue, Rafiqul had slapped Jibonnahar and later went to sleep. An outraged Jibonnahar hit him in the head with a brick hit several times, leaving him unconscious.
Afterwards, Jibonnahar ensured his death by strangling him with a gamucha and then hid his body inside the wardrobe, said the SP.
The SP said Jibonnahar went to work as usual the next morning and returned home around 11pm, when she decided to get rid of Rafiqul’s body by dismembering it into six pieces.
She dumped his severed head and limbs on a nearby sewer after putting them in a sack. She also put the torso in a sack and dumped it in a bamboo grove near the Meghna Knit Composite Ltd factory.
On Friday morning, locals saw the bloodied sack near the factory and informed police. After recovering the mutilated body parts, police had detained Jibonnahar for questioning.
She confessed to killing Rafiqul during interrogation later, SP Shamsunnahar said.
Jibonnahar also told reporters that she was physically abused by her husband many times.
Sreepur police station Officer-in-Charge Jabedul Islam said Rafiqul’s father had filed a murder case accusing Jibonnahar. She has been shown arrested in it.
Jibonnahar, of Netrokona, and Rafiqul, of Mymensingh, got married five years ago. Their four-year-old daughter was at the house of Jibonnahar’s sister during the incident.
