Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has detained a former deputy secretary for his alleged involvement in online anti-state activities and attempts to make the upcoming general election questionable.
A RAB 2 team had picked up Dr Neyamat Ullah Bhuiyan from his residence in Dhanmondi, Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon, according to the elite force.
Confirming his detention to the Dhaka Tribune, RAB 2 Commanding Officer Anwar Uz Zaman said that Neyamat was reportedly involved in cybercrimes.
The official denied to give further details regarding the charges, but added that they were preparing to start a case on Thursday against Neyamat under three sections of the Digital Security Act.
“We have also found some evidence of the anti-state propaganda he was spreading,” said Anwar.
Until March 2016, Neyamat had also served as the deputy project director of Safety Net System for the Poorest (SNSP) Project of Bangladesh Poverty Database under the Statistics and Informatics Division, according to a Public Administration Ministry document.
