Five war crimes suspects detained in Khulna

Police have detained five men suspected of committing war crimes in Khulna during the Liberation War. They were detained in separate drives from their homes in Batiaghata upazila on Thursday night, UNB reports. The suspects are Ashraf Sheikh, Amzad Hossain, Atier Sheikh, Mottasen Billah and Kamaluddin Boldar. Batiaghata OC Enamul Haq said the men were detained in separate cases and were later shown arrested in cases filed over war crimes. An estimated three million people were killed and millions of others were forced to flee to India during the War of Liberation with Pakistan. Suspected war criminals were put on trial after the government set up the International Crimes Tribunal in 2010. Most of the war crimes convicts belong to the Jamaat-e-Islami, a party which openly opposed Bangladesh's independence.
