A suspected drug peddler has been killed in an alleged gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion 5 (RAB) in Pabna upazila.
The incident happened in the early hours of Friday at Afi Nepalpara of the upazila.
One foreign firearm, two rounds of bullets, one magazine, and 78 bottles of phensedyl were recovered from the scene.
The deceased was identified as Hasibul Hossain Ghosh, 37, son of late Aftab Hossain Pochu of Shonaikandi village, Rajshahi.
RAB 5 Deputy Commanding Officer Major AFM Ashraful Islam has confirmed the news.
He said: “After receiving a tip-off about a drug deal, we conducted a drive in the area around 3:30am.
“Upon sensing the presence of law enforcers, the drug dealers opened fire at us. Hasibul was shot when we fired back in self-defense.”
“Later, he was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead,” Major Ashraful added.
According to RAB, there are seven cases filed against Hasibul in different police stations, in Rajshahi and he is one of the biggest drug dealers of the region.
