Five DU students injured in BCL attack

Five students of Dhaka University have been injured when the activists of Jagannath Hall unit Chhatra League beat them up during the Saraswati Puja celebrations Wednesday. The BCL activists also assaulted two journalists at that time. They are the Daily Amader Somoy reporter Ali Asif Shaon and Independent Television reporter Mahmudur Rahman. Seven Chhatra League members have been identified for their involvement in the attack. The former and current students of mass communication and journalism department were dancing in front of the department’s Puja pavilion around 11:30pm Wednesday. But some Chhatra League activists ordered them to stop. When the MCJ students refused to follow the order, the Chhatra League men attacked the students with sticks, hockey sticks and cricket stamps leaving five students injured. The injured – Anik Rahman, Ali Azam, Abu Sayeed, Jahid Hasan and Ikhlas Chowdhury – were admitted to university medical centre. Jagannath Hall Provost Ashim Sarkar said: “A committee will be formed and administrative action will be taken as per the committee’s recommendation.” Chhatra League’s DU unit President Abid Al Hasan admitted that the activists of the ruling party’s student wing had launched the attack. He said that they had identified seven activists who were involved in the attack. Chhata League’s central President Saifur Rahman Sohag said that the organisation would take action against the identified activists.
