Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) officials have detained two men, including a civil aviation security guard, with contraband gold worth an estimated Tk30 lakh at Dhaka airport.
CIID officials said they were tipped off about a smuggling bid on Wednesday by a man coming in from Riyadh on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight.
After the flight landed, the officials identified the smuggler and interrogated him at the immigration point.
Kuddus Shikdar, the smuggler, said he was supposed to deliver five gold bars (each weighing 116 grams) to a civil aviation guard Razaul Karim.
They also found a picture of Razaul on Kuddus’ mobile phone.
CIID officials told Kuddus to proceed as per their plan and nabbed Razaul when he was receiving the gold bars.
Razaul had been working as a civil aviation guard for 22 years.
On Tuesday, the CIID detained three people, including an airport security guard, for similar reasons. Earlier, a Biman traffic supervisor was caught red-handed with smuggled gold.
