Manarat student reportedly killed over betting on BPL

A student of Manarat International University has been stabbed to death by miscreants in Dhaka’s Middle Badda area on Monday morning. The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Nasim Ahmed, a second-year BBA student. Nasim’s neighbour Md Limon, said a group of about 10 miscreants stabbed him in front of their house around 9:30am on Monday. Limon rushed Nasim to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 10:45am. The victim's family claimed that unidentified assailants killed him because he tried to stop them from betting on a Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) cricket match. Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) outpost Sub-Inspector Bachchu Miah confirmed the matter and told reporters that someone stabbed Nasim in front of his house when he was on his way to get breakfast. Nasim's father Saifuddin Ahmed and brother Fahim Ahmed told reporters that there had been an altercation between Nasim and a local man called Ramzan on Sunday over a cricket match. After heated arguments, at one stage Nasim slapped Ramzan which led to a clash. Witnesses said when Nasim’s father Saifuddin reached the spot, Ramzan’s uncle also assaulted him. Fahim Ahmed said an arbitration to settle the feud was scheduled to be held on Monday evening. However, the culprits murdered Nasim and fled the scene before any such legal recourse could be taken. When this report was written on Monday around 9pm, Badda police's officer in-charge Kazi Wajed Ali said no case was filed in this regard and no arrests have been made.
