CCTV footage shows muggers who possibly killed DIU student at Wari

A CCTV camera of a nearby building in Dhaka’s Wari may have caught the muggers who are suspected to have stabbed to death Daffodil International University student Khondakar Abu Talha, according to sources. Witnesses have said that Talha, 22, was stabbed with a sharp weapon when he was trying to stop and catch several muggers who had just robbed two people in the area. The incident happened at Wari’s KM Das Lane on Sunday morning. Nur Uddin, father of the second-year student of computer science and engineering, earlier had told the Dhaka Tribune that Talha was attacked when he was going to the university around 6:30am. He said the muggers had fled the scene after stabbing Talha and snatching his mobile phone and wallet. The Dhaka Tribune has obtained the video footage which shows two youths right before and after they snatched the valuables from two passengers of a rickshaw. Litu was seen carrying the purse of the female passenger of the rickshaw. Both of them were released from prison few days ago, according to sources, adding that police were already looking for them over the incident. However, Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Wari Division Deputy Commissioner Mohammed Farid Uddin told the Dhaka Tribune they were investigating and yet to confirm the identities of the killers. “However, we have heard some stuff about the muggers’ identities. We are collecting the CCTV video footage and will identify them soon,” he said. He added that they were also looking into allegations that there was a third person involved in the attack on Talha. Wari police station Officer-in-Charge Rafiqul Islam said Talha had returned home in a bloodied state after he was stabbed. Family members then rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he died undergoing treatment around 8:15am. Doctors said Talha died from excessive bleeding from the wound on his right thigh, Rafiqul added. One of the first mugging victims, Azizul Hakim Sunny told the Dhaka Tribune that he and his sister were on their way to the school where his sister works, when the two muggers stopped them. “They had knives. I handed my wallet over while they took my sister’s purse,” he said, adding that he had sustained minor injuries. Until 9pm Sunday, no case was filed over Talha's death with police. His family said they would take legal measures after the burial.
