Five-year-old Dinajpur rape victim recognises her attacker

Parbotipur Sub-Inspector Abdul Momen took Saiful to DMCH from Dinajpur jail. The girl has been undergoing treatment at the hospital since October 16. “Saiful was brought before the victim at around 2pm, after taking permission from hospital authorities. She recognised him immediately,” SI Momen said. According to the SI,the victim said she was playing with her friends prior to the abduction. At one point, Saiful came and asked her to accompany him. He gave her a drink, which left her in a disorientated state. Saiful then took her to a secluded area and tortured her, the police official added.

SI Momen said as a part of his responsibility of dealing with cases of violence against children, he can record statements from victimised children without a court order by taking the accused along with him under police protection, according to article 22 of the Women and Children Repression Act 2010. The minor had gone missing on October 17 and was found in a crop field not far from her home on the following day. She had stab marks on her private parts as well as the rest of her body. When her family members were frantically searching for her, Saiful told them that the girl was taken by a djinn To prove his point, he called upon Afzal Hossain, a village quack who claimed that she would be found the following morning.

Later, the victim's father filed a case with the police station and Saiful was placed under police remand. Saiful refused to confess to the crime. The police finally took him to DMCH to record the victim's statement. While she was expected to return home this week, her physicians have said that they are waiting for test results before confirming her release.
