Bangladesh Bank heist: CID investigators meet ex-governor Atiur

Sources confirmed the Dhaka Tribune that a four-member team led by CID's Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Shah Alam met Atiur at his residence to talk about the $81m cyber heist, the largest in banking history thus far. Shah Alam said they were talking to people to gather information to further their investigation. Atiur Rahman confirmed the meeting to the Dhaka Tribune. He said: “I met with them as the CID is in conversation with several others including another former Bangladesh Bank governor to gather information.” “The investigation process is lengthy and they are making sure there is no gap in the information they have gathered. It is always good to cross check information. They also spoke to the former governor Farashuddin,” he added. Atiur Rahman, tendered his resignation as Bangladesh Bank governor to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on March 15 over the multi-million dollar cyber heist. Atiur drew flak from the government for informing them about the theft from the central bank’s reserve account with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York more than a month after it happened. He had served as Bangladesh Bank governor since 2009 with his tenure extended twice. The tenure was supposed to end on August 2 this year. On February 5, hackers stole $101 million from Bangladesh Bank’s accounts in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and transferred $81m to Philippines’ Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation, from where the money was moved to local casinos. A further $20m was recovered from Sri Lanka.
