A Rangamati court placed a youth named Bivas Dewan on a two-day remand yesterday, three days after he was held by the Border Guard Bangladesh officials for posing as an army officer.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Kazi Mohammad Mohsin also ordered one-day remand for four of his associates and sent 11 others to jail. The four – all students – are Riten Chakma, Smriti Bikash Chakma, Gyan Alo Chakma and Rigen Chakma.
After giving the order, the court set March 29 for further hearing in the case filed against them under the Special Powers Act and the Disclosure of Public Interest Information (Protection) Act.
According to local sources, Bivas was held along with 11 of his associates including three monks from Rajban Bihar when they were returning from a BGB camp at Falitenga Mon of Borkol on Thursday. Bivas was first welcomed by the BGB men as he identified himself as a second lieutenant of Bangladesh Army.
But the BGB officers were suspicious seeing the team members moving scattered while coming down from the hill and passing the check post.
They then contacted the authorities concerned to verify the identity of Bivas, and found that he was a fraud.
The 12 people were then detained by the BGB members for questioning.
An army uniform was found from the possession of Bivas. Later they were handed over to Borkol police. Based on information given by Bivas, RAB 7 members conducted a raid in Bayezid area of Chittagong and detained four students. They were handed over to Rangamati Kotwali police.
