A Dhaka court yesterday rejected two petitions seeking bail and remand for journalist leader Shawkat Mahmud in a violence case, and directed police to interrogate him at jail gate.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate SM Masud Zaman gave the order after hearing the two petitions filed by police and the defence counsel.
The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Subrata Guldarwas who was directed to grill Shawkat within three working days, filed one of the petitions seeking a 10-day remand order for the accused.
Shawkat's lawyer Md Sanaullah Miah, on the other hand, filed the other petition seeking bail for his client.
On February 22, 2013 the case was filed with Shahbagh police station on charges of perpetrating violence in the area.
On August 18 last year, detectives arrested Shawkat, also an adviser to the BNP chairperson, in front of Samurai Convention Centre in the capital’s Panthapath area.
